On Tuesday May 21st at 3:00 PM first responders from multiple agencies and local hospitals will be participating in a full-scale mass casualty incident (MCI) exercise at the Walla Walla Regional Airport. An MCI is any incident in which emergency medical services resources, such as personnel and equipment, are overwhelmed by the number and severity of casualties. In addition to a fire/medical response, this exercise will also involve local and state law enforcement agencies.
The exercise will be taking place at the Airport Passenger Terminal Building. The scenario will involve approximately 40 volunteer actors with simulated injuries. The public may observe emergency equipment and vehicles, flashing lights and sirens as part of the exercise.
The exercise will be conducted in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration requirements. The Walla Walla Regional Airport maintains an emergency plan outlining response procedures and agencies that must effectively respond to and manage emergency situations that occur on Airport property. Federal law requires that this plan be tested via a simulated incident every three years.
For everyone’s safety, the following road closures/changes will be implemented:
• A Street from U.S. Hwy 12 to E. Aeronica Ave will be closed in front of the Airport Passenger Terminal Building.
• U.S. Hwy 12 A Street/Airport Way westbound exit will remain open, but travelers will not be able to travel northbound on A Street.
• U.S. Hwy 12 A Street/Airport Way eastbound exit will remain open, but travelers will not be able to travel northbound on A Street.
• Travelers to and from the Airport are encouraged to use the G Street Hwy access.
